Muziki Changa was established in January 2013, in response to the need for developmental music lessons. Muziki Changa is the first step in a community of musical, educational and social programmes that work towards building a better society in Kenya, through music.
These include Nairobi Children’s Orchestra, Ghetto Classics and The National Youth Orchestra of Kenya.
Muziki Changa is inspired by similar programmes internationally, and maintains a healthy relationship with our counterparts overseas.
Our curriculum has been developed in consultation with you, the parents as well as experts in early childhood development, educational psychology and music education and performance.
Muziki Changa unites Jenny’s two passions, for music and for working with young children!
Jenny is a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and has been teaching music in Nairobi since 2012 in a variety of settings including national and international schools.
Alongside early years music education, Jenny’s other passion is for orchestral music. She is the principal tuba player of the Nairobi Orchestra, with whom she premiered Njane Mugambi’s Tuba Concerto in 2017. She also serves as secretary on the orchestra committee.
Jenny is a tutor for the National Youth Orchestra of Kenya, the Safaricom Youth Orchestra and Nairobi Children’s Orchestra.
One of Levi’s main interests is to help develop further the structures and curricula for instrumental music education in Kenya. Muziki Changa was developed as the vital first step in this structure, for the littlest people in our communities!
Levi is a graduate of Music (Bmus) from Kenyatta University. He continues to study conducting through the George Hurst Conductors’ Course in Sherborne, England every summer, and has conducted choirs and orchestras for adults and children in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Scotland, Italy and Venezuela.
He currently serves as Assistant Director of Music and teacher of sports at Peponi House Preparatory School.
Levi has participated with the Nairobi Orchestra for more than 16 years, playing percussion, clarinet and keyboard, and serving on the orchestra committee and as a regular rehearsal and concert conductor. He was the resident conductor with the Kenya Conservatoire of Music Orchestra for more than ten years where he now regularly offers assistance to young conductors. He is currently Musical Director with the National Youth Orchestra of Kenya and the Nairobi Children’s Orchestra. Levi also conducts the Safaricom Youth Orchestra, assisting Dr.Duncan Wambugu.
Winnie has a been member of the Muziki Changa team since 2015. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Kenyatta University. She is a tutor for the Nairobi Children’s Orchestra, and teaches piano, flute and clarinet at School of the Nations.
Winnie is a keen flautist, and performs with the National Youth Orchestra of Kenya, the Nairobi Orchestra and the Kenya Conservatoire of Music Symphony Orchestra, where she leads the flute section. She leads the woodwind section for the annual International Women’s Day Orchestra performances and is a member of the committee of the Nairobi Orchestra.
When she is not playing and teaching music, Winnie loves to read, describing herself as a bibliophile!
